“Formamide” and “Toxic EVA Foam Mats” have been the Internet buzzwords ever since the Belgian government decided to ban all sales of toxic EVA foam mats for babies and toddlers.
Subsequently, I’ve become a mom on a mission hunting for a safe alternative to an EVA foam mat which, at one point, adorned my kids’ playroom. (Sorry children, I had no clue).
Recently, I came across Panda Mat, a small family owned and operated company located in Upstate NY. Their product, the Panda Mat, is a baby play mat made of an organic cotton fabric with a bamboo/polyester core, Oeko-Tex-100 certified.
After a long search for a safe play mat for their baby son, as the owners of this non-toxic product put it, “the Panda Mat was born out of (their) frustration”. But what a great product it is! 
It is very large; it provides over 28 sq ft for kids to play on (56” wide x 73” long and 1” thick). The core is made of a bamboo and polyester blend. That being said, the mat does not have the same absorption as foam, but it still provides padding for those inevitable stumbles. Bamboo is grown without pesticides, requires very little water and is rapidly renewable. It is covered in 100% organic printed cotton fabric (GOTS Certified), and is washable. According to the manufacturer the Panda Mat does not contain formamide, heavy metals, phthalates, formaldehyde, PFOA’s, PVC, and NO harmful fire retardant chemicals.
The fire resistant barrier we use is viscose (rayon). (…) The non-woven viscose is quilted to the organic cotton cover and this gives the product the flame resistant characteristics.
Consequently, it does not have harmful off-gassing and it is very safe for your baby’s tummy time. It makes for a great safe alternative to toxic EVA foam mats. Visit the Panda Mat website, and don’t forget to tell your friends about it!
